About the Spanish Honor Society

The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish or Portuguese and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Formally organized as the Spanish National Honor Society in 1953, the name was changed in 1959. At present there are over 2,000 national and international chapters.

The purpose of the society is to recognize high achievement of high school students in the Spanish and Portuguese languages and to promote a continuing interest in Hispanic and Portuguese studies.

Any high school student who has maintained a 3.5 average in the study of Spanish or Portuguese for a minimum of three semesters, a 3.0 average overall, and is in the 10th grade or higher is eligible.

About Amboy's Chapter of the SHH

Amboy's chapter of the SHH is called Capítulo Roberto Cofresí after a  pirate who, as legend would have it, "stole from the rich and gave to the poor" in Puerto Rico during the early 1800's.

The chapter was established in 2008, and the first students were inducted in October of 2008.  Regular induction is done in the fall or spring.  Members are expected to maintain high academic achievement and to show an interest in the hispanic culture.
